Tomb Raider 2017
Twenty years ago, a video game about a maverick British archaeologist was released on several platforms – most notably on the first Playstation. Tomb Raider went on to sell 7.5 million copies worldwide and spawned a well loved series. Hollywood soon caught on and a movie, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001) was released starring Angelina Jolie in the title role. Whilst the film was critically panned, it was a box office success and soon followed by Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life (2003). This time the reviews, although not good, weren’t quite so bad – but that didn’t make up for the sequel’s poor financial performance.
Apart from a couple of games in the mid-noughties, it wasn’t until 2013 that Tomb Raider was
looked on as favourably as it’s original debut back in 1996. A reboot
of the same name was released that year on major platforms; a critical
and financial success for the brand. This interpretation of Lara was
younger and less experienced than in previous games with a more real
world game style. It was succeeded last year by Rise of the Tomb Raider,
which repeated its success in reviews and the box office. It comes as
little surprise then, that Hollywood are working on a reboot of the film
series – but this time, based on the recent rebooted video games.
At the helm of the Tomb Raider movie reboot is Norwegian director Roar Uthaug (The Wave) with different script drafts having been put together for the project these past few years, including one by Mark Fergus and Hawk Osby (Iron Man). However, the biggest news surrounding the film so far has been the potential involvement of Daisy Ridley. Since her break-out turn in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the Tomb Raider reboot’s producers have been considering her for the role of Lara Croft, and Ridley has likewise confirmed that there have been conversations on that topic – though, she has yet to receive an official offer to star.
